Hot Topic:

Gender Bending

Yesterday during my monthly trip to Barnes and Noble's I picked up the usual stack of mags to see what the people had to say this month. I flipped through Zink Magazine and i-D Magazine, and surprisingly both magazines were based on the same topics, blurred gender lines. There were men dressed in dresses and outrageous shoes, and women in menswear, the images were very intriguing.

When I looked at Zink, I stopped and thought about how most of the magazine is amazing photos and editorial shots, with the minimal amount of actual writing. It made me think that maybe by Zink being a fashion mag, they want the photos and clothes to speak for themselves. Sometimes an amazing dress or excellently designed bag is self-explanatory. Well this time around i-D wanted a dress and high heels to speak from a males perspective. If you have time you really should swing by your local bookstore to see what these two mags came up with.Very interesting.

Indigo Wednesdays

Vividbraille is sold all over the U.S., but one of the first stores to carry the line, House of Chants, along with Kraig Love, is now hosting a weekly event beginning April 30th at Via Nove in Ferndale. This is sure to be a treat for the artsy crowd because every night there will be a featured artist, designer, or musical guest. Via Nove has the reputation for some of the best southern Italian food you'll ever have, and the bar is guaranteed to make you leave happy ;-). Be sure to come out and enjoy yourself, and who knows, you might just run into someone from vividbraille.

New Nylon!

I don't exactly remember what I did to receive a free years subscription to Nylon..but when I get free stuff, and it deals with fashion and entertainment...I ask no questions. Take it and Run! This month's issue has split covers with the two stars of Gossip Girl. I got the copy with Leighton on the front, not my fav gossip girl, but she still gets love from me. This show seems like it can do no wrong, I haven't talked to one person who says they're not obsessed with GG. If you haven't seen the show yet, please come out from under that rock, because your definitely missing out. And get a copy of Nylon while your at it.

LV 2008 City Guide
Louis Vuitton is famously known for it's luggage and trunks. So it's only right for the company to publish their very own travel guide. Every year the company gives a unique perspective of 30 European cities, giving details on restaurants, hotels, shops and more. In 2004 they developed a New York City guide accompanying their 5th Ave. store opening. The set retails at $110 and it's available in French and English, this would be a nice investment to add to your coffee table collection, or a great gift for your favorite jet setter. VB crew @ Common Concert

The Common concert was soooooooooo dope! He did all the jams while looking H.O.T! He's such a great performer and lyricist, I'm sure everyone that went had an amazing time. I would have to say the highlights of the night were when he started doing all the old school dances, and when he free styled about Flint and knew so many details that we would think no one of his stature would know about. If you didn't get to to be you, lol. Maybe next time.

I've been performing for about 4 years now in total. It seems much longer than that, but there you have it.

It's taken me a very long time to understand the importance of image and appearance as a performing artist. People are interested in being engaged and entertained visually as well as through the music.

English rockers, however, seem to have an historically keen sense of fashion. In honor of my cousin's visit from London, I'd present a little lesson on two fashion trends still influencing British rock and fashion today.

Watch the footage from a Mod and Rocker Seaside clash in the mid-60s:

A new act which I quite favor, British grime/new rave act "Hadouken!" are inspiring new youth in England in a rave movement. The similarities are clear between this new, kerchief and day glo army and the mods of the 60s.

Food for thought:

"How do you go from where you are to where you want to be? You must have enthusiasm for life, you must have a dream or goal, and you must be willing to work for it."

Exert from my new favorite book Soaring On Your Strengths by Robyn Ryan. I read it non-stop the minute I got it. It's very inspiring and makes you immediately start being productive. It teaches you how to use your natural talents and excel instead of trying to fix your weaknesses...genius! At only $14 it's no reason for your to not get a copy of this book.

Sweet Smells...

Of Mary-Jane??

"Cannabis Rose Eau de Parfum is the ultra-sensual and completely intoxicating floral counterpart to the highly popular Cannabis Santal Collection. Top notes burst with the captivating aroma of Bulgarian roses infused with pomegranate flower and Italian bergamot. An alluring blend of cannabis accord, sheer jasmine, and rich dark chocolate make the heart of this sultry scent truly intoxicating, while base notes of white musk, patchouli, and oolong tea leave a lasting sensual finish."

Now that's's description of the "Cannabis Rose", but I want to see what it really smells like. And the most important thing...will I catch a contact??? lol. Personally I do not find the aroma of Marijuana tantalizing enough to where I'd want to spritz it on before a night out on the town. I might get arrested or something. Anywho, if you get a chance to smell it, give me the real scoop on how "Cannibus Rose" smells.

Oldie But Goodie:

Some like it Hot

Some people claim to be big fans of Marilyn Monroe. I have to admit I'm very fond of the image she made for herself. Well a few weeks ago I finally got to see her in action in Some Like it Hot, a hilarious comedy that is definitely a must see for us new generation folks. Ms. Monroe lived up to her name and was uber sexy throughout the entire film. I really enjoyed the film, now go find it at blockbuster...NOW! lol

Miss Doni W.

So many people think fashion to be designing, partying and partying a little more. I have had the opportunity to work with students, professionals and everyone in between. Those who have met me know that I can be a lil overbearing at times due to an obsession with creating the most intelligent fashion label in the world known as Vividbraille. I have outworked, outlasted and at times simply ran off a number of talented people on this journey called design and fashion. There is something to be said about someone who understands the hard work behind the glitz and glamor of fashion and someone who has the patience and understanding to work next to me. I would like to introduce you to someone who has been running with me step for step for the last several months. Donyale aka Doni W. has had her hands in a number of projects ranging from editor of a magazine, to running several blogs including Vividbraille's. Thanks miss Donyale keep doing what you do!

"Fashion as a
whole is a farce."

-Edie Sedgwick

Edie Sedgwick - The Ciao Manhattan Tapes

Something about Edie's life fascinates and scares me at the same time. She was sucked into a life that she had little control over. We should all be careful that we don't do the same.

It's official...Diddy rules the world. Clothes, music, cologne, reality tv, next it'll be Diddy Mobile or Bad Boy Airlines. He's had me hooked since the first season of making the band, and I'm listening to Danity Kane as we speak. His clothing line has conquered the men's fashion industry, and now he's moving over to the women's side. Not to mention he picked up Zac Posen's line, which is favored by Ms Rihanna, and consists of mostly really cool evening dresses. And I bet you didn't know he was involved with the production of Run's House (check the credits), maybe that's why Danity Kane wore Pastries at their performance??? Now Mr. Combs is airing a documentary about Sean John's journey to fashion week called "If I were King"....clearly he already has all the credentials to be king. Here's a link to the preview. Can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

Food For Thought

It's your choice...
In every social opportunity one of the following four situations will occur.

1. Free Rider
When one is acting self-interested while others are being considerate.

2. Ordinary Morality
All parties are being considerate of one another's needs.

3. Sucker's Payoff
When one person is being considerate of others, and everyone else is being self-interested.

4. State of Nature
When everyone is self-interested...every man for himself.

Which situation would you rather be in?

Think carefully...

Here's a little help. If you choose to be a Free-Rider know that someone else would have to encounter Sucker's Payoff. Once that person is "suckered", he'll eventually try to sucker you, and in turn, both of you will experience a State of Nature making it difficult for anyone to get ahead.

Summarized from the Hobbesian Prisoner's Dilemma

- Doni W.

Music, art and fashion always intersect in ways that fascinate me. One artist whose personal style seems to really reflect her music is M.I.A. For those of us with immigrant parents/family (my father moved here from Nigeria, and most of his family immigrated to London), or with family from places such as India, Africa, or other developing regions, we might be somewhat familiar with elements of M.I.A.’s style.

The effects of post-colonial globalization are reflected in the hand-me-down style that M.I.A. pairs with cutting edge trends and fabrics. I say hand-me-down rather than vintage, because in a lot of immigrant populations and developing countries, clothing isn’t seen as “vintage” as much as re-used. She’s also heavily influenced by the 1980s hip-hop/electro scene. On top of that, many of her colorful patterns worn in tunics and loose-fitting pants are traditional African and Indian prints.

So, I thought it would be fun to try and recreate the M.I.A. “look,” based loosely on her latest video:

First, you’re going to need to take a deep breath and squeeze into a pair of latex leggings. Make sure you use plenty of talcum powder! This pair from Kova & T retails at $113.

On top of the leggings, go the DIY route and make a top yourself! Find a crazy, fun print, like this yellow and green African print:

Or, find a fabric that works for you. Then, break out your sewing machine, buy some beers for that vegan friend who also makes all of his/her own clothes, and entertain him/her while he/she slaves away on a simple tunic for you to rock at the next Girl Talk or Justice show. If your friend doesn’t have any patterns, take an old t-shirt that fits you well and take it apart to see how it’s put together. Not only will you get an awesome and unique top, you’ll spend some quality time with your friend without having to picket outside of KFC.*

Now, if you live in any state that’s not Hawaii, you’ll need a layer to keep you warm while you walk to a cab, wait in line outside of the bar/club, or hit up multiple house parties in your neighborhood that weekend. Keeping in mind M.I.A.’s cutting edge (read: from outer space) fashion aesthetic, try this Crushed What Up jacket in silver from Rojas, retailing at $155:

I love the bat-wing silhouette and I am CONFIDENT that it will become a favorite in your closet (It would also look fly with just about any vividbraille tee you buy this season), not to mention a conversation-starter among any group of people.

For shoes, stick with a colorful sneaker, like these leopard-print canvas Pumas for $45
