CARUSO CARUSO - Rachel Koike

Vividbraille has interviewed Rachel Koike from Caruso Caruso, clothing store that is located in downtown Birmingham. We talked to her about her career, check it out for yourself....

What is the name of your store? Where can people find it?

The store name is Caruso Caruso. It's located in downtown Birmingham, on the north side of 15 Mile Rd.

What is the style of your store?

It is almost impossible to describe the entirety of the store's style. Caruso encompasses a variety of looks, however, boiled down, I'd say it's a contemporary men's and women's clothing store that specializes in premium denim. As far as jeans go, we carry over fifty brands. Top-selling companies are similar with other major vendors: Seven, J Brand, Diesel, AG,True Religion, Citizen's of Humanity, and MEK to name a few.

What do you do at your work?

I work as the Men's buyer, it's a fantastic job. I get to travel, converse and work with interesting people, plus bring in new and exciting product for the store.

What did you do before coming to Caruso Caruso?

Before coming here, I worked as a Media Merchandiser for Borders. I've had a lot of different jobs all through college, my number one being Pinball.

When did the store open and how was the process of opening it?

The store opened about twenty-nine years ago. Frank Caruso (the owner) initially opened it as a thrift shop and as time and money progressed, he eventually developed it into a premium clothing store. For about twenty years, he maintained three different locations all on Maple. About four years ago our current location opened up for lease and we combined all the stores into this 6,000 sq ft spot.

Was it hard in the beginning to catch on?

Coming to Caruso Caruso was quite a scene change, it had been a while since I worked for a non-corporate business. Frank is a very eccentric-Jerry Garica-esque creature and learning to work for him has been quite an experience.
New employee's are usually a little overwhelmed, training involves
trying on every style in the store, accompanied with a manual of all the information we'd like them to absorb. Learning all of the brands, fits, and style tendencies usually takes about one to two months.

What would you like people to know about Caruso Caruso?

We offer an extremely DIVERSE selection of product. Not everything at Caruso Caruso is ten-trillion dollars, we are adapting to this ever-changing economy and we want people to feel like they're getting a lot for their cash spent.

How do you know Vividbraille?

Vividbraille is one of the fashion (non-denim) brands we carry in the store. We've been working with the brand for a couple of years now, and it's built itself in as part of the store. Don't hit me up for it at the moment, I'm in the process of getting some inventory. Brock, Mr.Designer-Rep-Name-Boss Man of the company is the greatest.
